Sweat-Proof Makeup: You Really Just Need One Good Setting Spray

Every summer the internet sells you a twelve-step “sweat-proof makeup” routine — special primer, special foundation, special powder, special everything. I have tried the long version. Here is the honest truth: in Texas humidity, the thing that actually keeps your makeup on your face is one good setting spray. That is basically the whole secret.

The one thing that actually works

The setting spray I will not do summer without is One/Size Secure the Sandbag. It locks everything down through heat, sweat, and a full day out, and it does not go crackly or tight the way some long-wear sprays do. If you buy one product off this whole post, buy this. It genuinely does the job a whole “sweat-proof” routine claims to.

How I use it: a few generous mists in an X and a T across the face once I am done, let it dry without touching, and that is it. On really brutal days I will also mist before I start, so the makeup is sandwiched between two layers.

If you want to do a little more (you mostly do not)

None of this is required, but it helps the spray do its job:

  • Wear less makeup, not more. Heavy layers are what slide off. Cream products grip skin better than powder in humidity.
  • Let your sunscreen fully set before anything goes on top.
  • Blot, do not add. Carry blotting papers instead of powder so you are not building up a cakey layer that breaks apart.

That is the entire routine. One great setting spray, a lighter hand, and skin you actually protected. For the rest of my summer face — the bronzy, barely-there look — it is all in my sun-soaked glow post.
