Caddo Lake State Park: What Nobody Tells You Before You Go

Caddo Lake State Park: What Nobody Tells You Before You Go

Caddo Lake is one of those places that doesn’t look real. Cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, still black water, mist sitting low over everything — it looks like someone built a movie set in East Texas and forgot to tell anyone. It’s genuinely one of the most otherworldly places I’ve been in this state, and I’ve been to a lot of this state.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me before we went.

What Caddo Lake Actually Is

Caddo Lake sits on the Texas-Louisiana border and is one of the only naturally formed lakes in Texas — most of ours are man-made reservoirs. The cypress forest is the thing that makes it famous. Old growth trees rising out of the water, roots tangled, moss hanging down. It looks ancient because it is.

The town on the Texas side is called Uncertain. Population somewhere around 100. That name will either appeal to you immediately or it won’t, and either answer tells you something about whether you’ll love this trip.

What We Did

We stayed in a cabin in Karnack, right on the water. That’s the move. Waking up to the lake is the whole experience — the light in the morning, the way the mist sits over the cypress trees, the quiet.

We went canoeing, which is the main thing to do and also the right thing to do. Getting into the cypress forest from the water is completely different from looking at it from shore. It’s slow, it’s peaceful, and it doesn’t feel like anywhere else in Texas.

The sunsets were beautiful. The Piney Woods surrounding the area make the whole thing feel enclosed and green in a way that East Texas does and the Hill Country doesn’t. It’s a different part of the state and it feels like it.

What There Is to Do (Be Honest With Yourself About This)

Here’s the thing: there’s one main activity and that’s being on the water. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, a boat if you have one. That’s it. There’s no town with restaurants and shops. There’s no nightlife. There’s not a lot of infrastructure around the lake in the way that, say, a resort lake would have.

If you need a packed itinerary to enjoy a trip, Caddo Lake will frustrate you. If you can spend a full day just being somewhere beautiful and quiet, you’ll love it.

For food, the one legitimate find we had was the Shady Glade Cafe in Uncertain. It’s a little breakfast place and it was actually decent — which is more than you can say for most food options in a town of 100 people in the middle of nowhere. Go there for breakfast. Manage your expectations for everything else and bring groceries if you’re staying in a cabin.

Who This Trip Is For

Caddo Lake is for people who want to go somewhere genuinely different. It doesn’t look like Texas. It doesn’t feel like Texas. It’s quiet and a little eerie and completely beautiful and there is essentially one thing to do.

I’d go back. There’s something about a place that looks that otherworldly that makes you want to see it again — different season, different light. But with so many places in the world to see, it’s more of a “worth doing at least once, maybe twice” than an annual trip. Go once, do it properly, stay on the water. That’s the whole trip.

Practical Notes Before You Go

Where to stay: Karnack, on the water. Cabin rental. Don’t stay somewhere without water access — you’ll miss the whole point.

What to bring: Canoe or kayak rental is available but book ahead, especially on weekends. Bug spray. It’s East Texas and it’s wet. Groceries — food options around the lake are extremely limited.

Best time to go: Fall for the clearest water and the best light. Spring is beautiful but wetter. Summer is hot and humid in a way that’s different from Hill Country hot — it’s heavy. Winter is actually stunning if you can handle the chill — the mist on the water is at its most dramatic.

The town of Uncertain: Yes, that’s the real name. Yes, it’s worth visiting just to say you’ve been to a town called Uncertain, Texas. Population roughly 100. Shady Glade Cafe for breakfast.

Have you been to Caddo Lake? I’d love to know if you found anything worth eating that I missed.
