Things to Do in Wimberley, TX (Blue Hole, Jacob’s Well & Market Days)

Wimberley is my backyard, and it’s the town I send people to when they want the whole Hill Country distilled into one easy day: cold spring-fed swimming, a walkable square full of art and shops, and one of the biggest market days in Texas. Here’s the honest, specific version — including the reservations everyone forgets until they’re being turned away at the gate.

Swim Blue Hole (and book it first)

Blue Hole Regional Park is the postcard: emerald water along Cypress Creek that stays a cool 75 degrees, towering cypress trees, a grassy lawn to camp out on all afternoon, and rope swings that launch you out over the deep end. Here’s the part people miss — swimming requires a reservation from May 1 through Labor Day (plus September weekends). Passes are sold in half-day blocks, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. or 2 p.m.–6 p.m., and you book online ahead of time. Summer weekend slots in June and July sell out, so grab one the second you know your dates. Bring water shoes (the bottom is rocky), a towel, and cash; I packed the full list in what to pack for a swimming hole. Not swimming? The park and its 4+ miles of trails are free to walk year-round.

See Jacob’s Well

Jacob’s Well is the other natural wonder here — an artesian spring that drops more than 130 feet into a system of underwater caves (it’s a legendary, and genuinely dangerous, dive site). Swimming is seasonal and reservation-only when it’s open, but heads up: it’s been closed to swimming during recent low-water stretches, so check the Hays County page before you drive out. Even when you can’t get in, the natural area and trails are free and worth seeing.

Get on the water (and up in the trees)

Beyond the swimming holes, you can kayak the Blanco River, hike Mount Old Baldy for a quick payoff view of the valley, bird-watch at the Patsy Glenn Refuge, or drive the Devil’s Backbone — one of the prettiest scenic routes in the Hill Country. For a real adrenaline hit, Wimberley Zipline Adventures sends you flying across the 1,200-acre Winn Ranch canopy.

Time it for Market Days

Wimberley Market Days is the Hill Country’s biggest outdoor market — the first Saturday of every month, March through December, with 490-plus vendors of antiques, art, and food. Go early for parking and the good stuff, bring cash and a big tote, and wear broken-in shoes.

Wander the Square — and eat well

The Wimberley Square is small, walkable, and full of galleries, boutiques, and coffee, and Wimberley Glassworks (just outside town) does live glass-blowing demos that are genuinely fun. For food, the two I send everyone to are The Leaning Pear, a creekside farm-to-table spot that’s the perfect post-swim lunch, and Longleaf Craft Kitchen + Bar for a nicer dinner.

How I’d plan the day

Book your Blue Hole slot first, swim in the morning before the heat peaks, grab lunch at The Leaning Pear, then spend the afternoon on the Square (or at Market Days if it’s the first Saturday). Always confirm reservations for Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well before you go — they’re the things people drive out for and get turned away from. Build a packing list around your exact dates with my trip planner.

Make it a bigger trip

Wimberley pairs easily with the rest of the region. If you’re chasing cold water, here’s my honest guide to the best Hill Country swimming holes, and the full Hill Country bucket list ties it all together.
